Mr. Sunmonu was previously the Managing Director of Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC) & Country Chairman of Shell Companies in Nigeria with an oil & gas career spanning over 36 years in Nigeria, United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. He was also Vice President Production for Sub-Saharan Africa, a role that gave him oversight over the Company’s business in countries within the region, including Gabon. He was the pioneer responsible for mobilising the private sector to set up the National Business Council for Sustainable Development (NBCSD) and is the recipient of many awards including the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) and the Sustainability Development Champion (2014 SERA Awards).
He holds a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics & Computer Science from the University of Lagos and received a honorary doctorate degree from the University of Uyo. He currently serves on the board of various organizations across multiple sectors of the economy including Real Estate, Construction, Oil & Gas and Education. He is Chairman of Julius Berger Nigeria Plc and Coronation Insurance Plc, and an Independent Non-Executive Director of Unilever Nigeria Plc. He is a Fellow of the Nigeria Society of Engineers (FNSE).
